Ziaur Rahman declared Bangladesh’s independence in 1971, as per the new curriculum of Bangladesh for the year 2025.
The Daily Star reports, the previous curriculum stated that Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is the founder of Bangladesh.
He was declared the father of the Bengali nation. It omitted the title of “Father of the Nation” attached to Mujibur Rahman from the revised basic and secondary textbooks. The books now offer an alternative version of declaring independence.
The head of the National Curriculum and Textbook Board, said that the textbooks say that Ziaur Rahman proclaimed independence on March 26, 1971.
Ziaur Rahman is said to have issued another statement the following day in the name of Mujibur Rahman.
The officials who were engaged in the process said that these changes were made to ensure historical accuracy.
Rakhal Raha, a writer and researcher working on the changes to the textbook. She said it was done to remove “exaggerated, imposed history.” According to her, it is not true to say that Mujibur Rahman had sent a radio broadcast announcing independence while he was being detained. This was why the information was removed.
Over the years, historical accounts in textbooks from grades one through ten were constantly altered according to the ruling administration.
But the supporters of the Awami League are not buying this change. This debate reveals deeper political divisions within the country.
These are part of greater changes since the daughter of Mujibur Rahman, Sheikh Hasina, was sacked as prime minister in August.
The national holiday on Mujibur Rahman’s murder on 15 was also dismissed by the caretaker setup.
