Another dream of Gen Z’s is coming to an end as their favorite internet calling service Skype is about to shut down forever from May 5th.
As per Microsoft’s report, Skype is going to end as the company wants to focus more on in-house service teams. The service teams are completely involved with other office apps for corporate users.
Skype, which was introduced in 2003, became a very popular internet calling platform. It audio and visual calls affected and completely changed the paradigm of the landline industry.
However, in current times, Skype could not compete with modern apps like Zoom, Google Meet, Slack, etc., and users found Zoom and Google Meet more convenient and faster than Skype, due to which Skype saw a decline in its users.
Experts stated that the major reason for Skype shut down is due to decline in their ability to not update the technology for the smartphone era.
After COVID-19, Microsoft turned its attention towards Teams rather than focusing on Skype by making Teams the best solution for businesses to stay connected during pandemics.
Microsoft has stated that users will be able to log in to Teams and they do not need to make a new account for Teams and they can use the existing credentials.
Moreover, the chat and history of the Skype users will be transferred to Teams, so they don’t need to worry about their data being wasted.
Skype has officially joined the list of Microsoft projects that have lost their popularity over time, including Internet Explorer and Windows Phone.
Microsoft is not the mother company of Skype. However, they bought Skype in 2011 for $8.5 billion when it was able to compete with Google and Facebook.
Skype used to have 150 million monthly users at that time, which has now fallen to 23 million by 2021.
A good decision for previous Skype users is that Microsoft has decided not to lay off any employees. Skype has played a significant role in shaping modern communication, stated Microsoft.
