PCB selectors are scheduled to travel to Kakul in an attempt to convince Babar Azam to assume the captaincy for Twenty20 international matches. Chairman Mohsin Naqvi and the selectors met late on Friday night and came to this conclusion.
Initially, till the next T20 World Cup, the PCB wants Babar to take over as captain. Babar, though, is more likely to commit to the position of captain for the long term. He has expressed to the Pakistan Cricket Board his desire to lead in all forms, as per media reports.
The captain will have full power, and the selectors will make every effort to reassure Babar of this. Babar’s close associates urge him to make his demands known right now, pointing out the board’s precarious situation. This tactic does, however, run the danger of unintended consequences. If Babar doesn’t change his mind, there’s a chance that alternative leadership choices may be investigated.
The board may make an announcement about the captaincy at a news conference on Sunday.
