Luigi Mangione, the individual accused of killing UnitedHealth executive Brian Thompson has arrested in Pennsylvania on Monday.
Luigi Mangione, 26-year-old, shoot dead the UnitedHealth CEO outside a New York City hotel last week. Police got the CCTV footage of the scene. As per footage the culprit fled on foot after shooting Thompson and then used a bike to escape into Central Park. Surveillance footage later showed him taking a taxi to a bus station where he is believed to have boarded a bus to leave the city.
Recently, Luigi Mangione was arrested at McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania. He was captured after the McDonald’s staff recognized him and informed the police.
A Police officer said in a press briefing that when they asked Mangione about whether he had recently been in New York, he began to tremble and fell silent. “He was sitting in McDonald’s alone with a laptop and backpack while wearing a mask”, police officer stated.
After detaining Mangione, police searched his backpack. “In his backpack we found a ghost gun, untraceable firearm assembled from separate parts. The weapon was loaded with a magazine and fitted with a silencer”, police officer stated.
Authorities have also seized multiple electronic devices from him, which are currently being analyzed.
After the early investigation Mangione was taken to the Blair County courthouse in Altoona where charges related to firearms and forgery were read to him.
During the hearing a judge asked Mangione if he understood the charges. At this Mangione confirmed that he did, but he did not enter a plea. In New York, prosecutors filed a murder charge against Mangione.
Police in Pennsylvania stated during a press conference that they are investigating whether Mangione had been involved in other acts of violence. Officials confirmed that he had been in Pennsylvania for several days but are working to establish his exact movements and activities in the state.
Officials revealed that Mangione is originally from Maryland and possessed several fraudulent IDs.
Mangione is graduate from a private all-boys school in Baltimore in 2016. He earned dual engineering degrees from the University of Pennsylvania in 2020, according to academic records. His last known residence was in Honolulu, officials stated.
New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated that the police found a handwritten document from his backpack. “Although it does not clear Mangione’s motive behind this killing but it uncovered his mindset”, official stated.
Mangione will appear in court on 23 December in Pennsylvania pending an expected warrant from New York.
