A new variant of Covid-19, referred to as “XEC,” is quickly making its way through Europe, with scientists cautioning it could soon become the predominant strain.
Originally detected in Germany in June, XEC cases have now been found in the UK, US, Denmark, and numerous other nations, as shared by users on X (formerly Twitter).
This variant exhibits some novel mutations that might accelerate its spread in the coming months, although current vaccines are anticipated to still offer protection against severe outcomes, according to expert analysis.
Symptoms associated with XEC include a high fever or chills, where an individual feels noticeably warm on their chest or back, along with a persistent cough lasting over an hour or reappearing multiple times throughout the day.
To date, approximately 550 instances of this strain have been reported across 27 countries, including Poland, Norway, Ukraine, Portugal, the US, and China.
The XEC strain, a branch of the Omicron variant, is advancing swiftly through Europe, North America, and parts of Asia. Specialists suggest its new mutations may enhance transmission this autumn, though vaccines should continue to reduce severe illness.
Symptoms include high fever, persistent cough, loss of taste or smell, fatigue, and body aches. While most recover within a few weeks, some may require extended care or hospitalization.
