Video game award 2024 honored PlayStation’s mascot platformer Astro Bot with the top prize on Thursday night.
In this competition, several major studios revealed their exciting new projects. These included a sci-fi game from The Last of Us creators Naughty Dog, the first teaser for The Witcher 4, and a follow-up to the 2022 award-winning Elden Ring.
Astro Bot won the coveted “Game of the Year” award and swept other categories, including “Best Game Direction,” “Best Action/Adventure Game,” and “Best Family Game.”
While receiving the award, director Nicolas Doucet expressed gratitude for winning the award of most popular video game. He also credited Nintendo’s iconic Mario series as an inspiration for their platformer which boosted its value in the market.
Sony scored additional wins with Helldivers II, which claimed “Best Multiplayer Game” and “Best Ongoing Game.”
ReFantazio was another major victor, taking home awards for “Best Role Playing Game,” “Best Narrative,” and “Best Art Direction.”
Indie success story Balatro, created by a solo developer, won “Best Independent Game,” “Best Debut Indie Game,” and “Best Mobile Game,” marking a huge achievement for the indie gaming community.
In this award ceremony many other studios revealed their projects. Just before the final award, Naughty Dog unveiled Intergalactic, The Heretic Prophet, a sci-fi adventure featuring Jordan A. Mun, a dangerous bounty hunter portrayed by Tati Gabrielle. Kumail Nanjiani is also set to appear in this new franchise.
Projekt RED gave fans a sneak peek at its upcoming title, The Witcher 4, where Ciri will take center stage as the main protagonist, offering a fresh perspective on the series.
FromSoftware revealed Elden Ring Nightreign, a co-op action survival game slated for release next year. Positioned as a spinoff rather than a direct sequel, it builds on the universe of the original hit.
The 2024 Game Awards not only celebrated the best in gaming but also set the stage for what’s next in the industry.
