Faisalabad is currently grappling with a significant surge in vegetable prices. This spike has frustrated citizens as they struggle to cope with the rising cost of essential food items.
Potatoes, officially priced at Rs80 per kilogram, are sold for as much as Rs150 in local markets.
Similarly, the price of peas has soared from Rs250 to Rs400 per kilogram, while ginger, officially listed at Rs900, is now fetching an alarming Rs1,200 per kilogram.
Local shopkeepers claim they are unable to procure vegetables at the government-mandated prices, citing supply shortages as the primary reason for the price hikes.
This has led to further challenges for consumers, who are bearing the brunt of inflated costs.
In response, the district administration has imposed fines totaling over Rs19 million on around 2,600 profiteers.
Despite these measures, authorities acknowledge that more needs to be done and have vowed to intensify their crackdown on price gouging to stabilize the market.
