US Democrats will elect a new leader to help rebuild the party after last year’s crushing defeat, on Saturday.
The new leader will also need to decide how to best counter Republican President Donald Trump.
Members of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) will meet in a Washington-area hotel to review their November defeat. The committee will also select a new chairperson to plan the party’s future strategy.
North Carolina Democratic Party deputy digital director Katherine Jeanes compared the experience more like guerilla warfare than chess-like maneuvering. “This is guerilla warfare in political form,” she explained.
Maryland Governor Wes Moore emphasized that the party shouldn’t pull back until the next election. He urged Democrats to hold the line and show the country what they are capable of doing.
Jeanes continued that Democrats last year didn’t realize they were in an echo chamber until it was too late. The party had been isolated from outside views, which impacted their policies.
Jeanes continued that young male voters were deserting the Democratic Party for the Republicans. The voters were being funneled into the alt-right pipeline, which took them away from Democratic values.
Trump, following his November win, attributed right-wing podcasts such as the Joe Rogan Experience to broadcasting his White House comeback. He continued that White House interviews on these shows assisted him in regaining some voter blocs.
Jeanes proposed that Democrats need to move into uncharted areas such as sports podcasts and video games. She underscored the need to appeal to apolitical audiences in a bid to boost the party’s appeal.
