OKARA: Speakers discussed various social and legal frameworks on the prevention of child labor at a seminar organized by Department of Educational Planning & Management (EPM) of the University of Okara (UoO).
The students highlighted the child labor practices through models, posters, documentaries and skits. A walk was also organized at the campus.
The event was chaired by the Head of the department, Dr Shehzad Ahmed, while the students’ activities were supervised by Ms Noreen.
The speakers included Dr Tahir Khan Farooqi, Chairperson Department of Educational Research & Assessment, Dr Khalid Saleem, Chairperson Department of Teacher Education and Sharjeel Ahmed, Public Relation Officer.
Addressing to the participants, Dr Farooqi stated, “Child labor is not just an economic problem; it’s a violation of fundamental rights. We need concerted efforts to dismantle the systemic issues that perpetuate this cycle.”
Dr Saleem said, “The economic vulnerability of families often drives children into labor. Addressing poverty through targeted interventions is crucial in eradicating this menace.”
Sharjeel discussed certain social hazards linked to child labor, especially in the context of Pakistan. He also explained the legal frameworks of International Labor Organization (ILO) to combat the problem.
Dr Shehzad, in his closing remarks, thanked the speakers and the participants for sparing time to address the issue of great significance. He appreciated the students’ efforts to make the event vibrant through performances and presentations.
