Earlier Israel has warned UNIFIL to leave southern Lebanon as Israeli forces believe that UN peacekeepers cannot or will not stop the clashes between Israel and Hezbollah.
Responding this warning UNIFIL announced that it has a legal right to remain in the area. The peacekeeping force stated that Israeli attacks on their buildings are breaking the international law.
Later the UN Security Council also mentioned that Israel and Hezbollah should make sure UNIFIL’s safety. “Peacekeepers in the conflicted should never be attacked. The department offered its full support to UNIFIL, as it is playing in keeping the area stable”, Council stated.
The Security Council also voiced concerns about the humanitarian crisis in these conflicts. Council members expressed worries about injuries to civilians, damage to buildings, and harm to important cultural sites.
Council highlighted that it is unfair to force civilians to leave their homes within Lebanon. The Council urged all parties to follow international laws on human rights and obey existing UN rules.
