As part of Kyiv’s most recent assault on Moscow’s energy assets, Ukrainian drones struck a fuel and energy plant in the Russian area of Kaluga, a Ukrainian military intelligence source stated Monday.
The assertion was made as Ukrainian officials said that Moscow was launching 145 drones at Ukraine overnight and that a Russian missile attack had injured about two dozen persons in the eastern city of Kharkiv.
Russia launched its new Oreshnik missile on Ukraine last week, sparking calls for de-escalation as Moscow and Kyiv have been stepping up cross-border drone and missile assaults.
“Overnight, a petroleum and energy facility in the Kaluga district of Russia was hit due to an operation by the Ukrainian Defense Intelligence,” the source stated.
The governor of Kaluga, Russia, which is located just south of Moscow, stated that a “industrial enterprise” had caught fire and reported that eight drones had been shot down by the area’s air defense systems.
Social media users shared unverified photos of the purported attack, which included a big fire adjacent to two industrial chimneys and tracer gunfire piercing the night sky.
The source said that Kaluganefteprodukt JSC, an oil depot that supports Russia’s armed operations against Ukraine, was the attack’s objective.
According to Russian President Vladimir Putin, the attack on the city of Dnipro last week tested “one of the newest Russian mid-range missile systems” under combat conditions. He also promised that further “tests” of this kind would be conducted.
The Russian strike on Kharkiv, which has been repeatedly bombarded since the Kremlin started its invasion in early 2022, saw inhabitants and rescue personnel evaluating the damage and cleaning wreckage on Monday, according to AFP correspondents in Kharkiv.
