In Indonesia’s Aceh province, 2 men were flogged publicly for homosexuality.
According to international media, the flogging began at a hall in Banda Aceh’s Bustanussalatin city in a park in the provincial capital, Banda Aceh, where one man was flogged 82 times and the other man was flogged 77 times for encouraging a relationship.
As reported by media officials, both criminals were flogged with bamboo sticks while dozens of people watched the scene.
On the court’s order, the sentences of both men were reduced by three lashes in exchange for three months of detention.
This marks the fourth instance of Aceh, Indonesia’s only province enforcing Sharia law, carrying out public flogging for homosexuality since the Islamic law was introduced in 2006 as part of a government deal to end a prolonged separatist conflict.
The two men, aged 24 and 18, were whipped multiple times on the back by a group of five enforcers dressed in robes and hoods. After every 20 lashes, they were given a break to drink water, and their wounds were treated.
Their arrest occurred in November when residents, suspecting them of being gay, forced their way into their rented room. They found the two men naked and embracing before handing them over to the Sharia police.
