Despite Donald Trump’s withdrawal of government funding and assistance, the president of the upcoming UN climate meeting has stated that the US will remain “central” to resolving the climate catastrophe.
Brazil’s president-designate for the Cop30 summit, André Corrêa do Lago, made a suggestion that US companies and other organizations may contribute without the White House.
During a call with reporters on Friday, he stated, “We have no idea of ignoring the US.” One important nation in this exercise is the United States. The US government will restrict its involvement, but the US is a nation with incredible invention and technology, so it can make a contribution. The US serves as a focal point for these debates and solutions.
In a letter to all UN members on Monday, Corrêa do Lago outlined Brazil’s hopes that all states will prepare national plans for significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions prior to the November commencement of the summit in Belém, a rainforest city at the mouth of the Amazon.
The letter stated, “According to scientists, Cop30 will be the first [summit] to be held at the epicenter of the climate crisis and the first to be hosted in the Amazon, one of the world’s most important ecosystems, which is currently in danger of reaching an irreversible tipping point.” “Change, whether intentional or unavoidable, is inevitable.”
There will be forums for entrepreneurs and investors, as well as regional and local governments, including those from the United States, in addition to the formal negotiations at the summit, which are only open to national governments. According to Corrêa do Lago, these would be necessary for advancement because the Cop should not only concentrate on two weeks of technical negotiations but also include a continuous process of implementing climate action.
“People think these cops are only interested in negotiating,” he stated. However, we think it’s critical to expedite the implementation of [already agreed-upon steps]. Let’s explore how we can expedite our previous agreement.
The developed world is in disarray as a result of Trump’s response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the ongoing rearmament of Europe. Many emerging nations fear that, as the largest economies quarrel, they will fall further behind.
