The Additional Sessions Judge (Court-II) in Sukkur has issued summons requiring the Prime Minister, Foreign Minister, and Interior Minister to appear before the court on January 15.
Additionally, the court has issued the direction for the Speaker of the National Assembly to ensure the attendance of all these officials.
The petition accuses the government of negligence, attributing the loss of lives to a lack of employment opportunities that compel individuals to leave the country through illegal means.
It also calls for a case to be filed against the government officials at the Rohri police station for their failure to prevent the tragic incident.
Notably, this devastating incident occurred, when a boat, carrying a large number of migrants, including Pakistanis, overturned near the southern coast of Gavdos Island.
It is pertinent to note that Greece is the main entry point for migrants from Asia, Africa, and the Middle East to enter in the European countries. During the 2015-2016 migration surge, nearly a million people reached its shores, often via overcrowded inflatable boats. However, the boat accidents and shipwrecks in the central Mediterranean have increased alarmingly in recent years.
