A suicide attack was carried out on a convoy transporting foreign nationals in Karachi on Friday morning.
All the foreigners who are said to be Japanese remained safe in attack, police confirmed, stating two attackers were killed – one by the police guard on duty, and the other by detonating his explosives.
The attack occurred at approximately 6:50 am when two terrorists chased the convoy through the Mansehra Colony of Landhi area in Karachi, near a speed bump. Two security guards and a passerby were injured in this attack that targeted a vehicle carrying five foreign nationals to an export processing zone.
The President of Pakistan, Asif Ali Zardari, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, and the Interior Minister, Mohsin Naqvi, have praised the efforts of the police and their bravery. They have vowed to eliminate the threat of terrorism and ensure the safety of foreign nationals in Pakistan.
Meanwhile, Deputy Inspector General East Zone Karachi, Ghulam Azfar Meser has confirmed this incident. However, all the foreigners escaped unharmed. The convoy was passing through the Malir Sharif Goth police station precincts when the vehicle carrying foreign nationals slowed down at a speed breaker, two terrorists chased this vehicle while the police guards on duty immediately responded when one of the attackers detonated himself while the other started firing. The police guard in response killed this terrorist.
After arriving at the scene, police and rescue teams quickly responded, moving foreigners to a safer location and transporting the injured to nearby hospitals for medical attention. Officials at the site confirmed that one of the deceased was a suicide bomber, while the other attacker was killed by police gunfire.
It has been reported that the attacker who died was around 35 years old. Two security guards, Noor Mohammad, and Langar Khan, were injured during the incident. Upon hearing the explosion, the police intervened quickly. A terrorist armed with a rifle and grenades opened fire on the police, leading to a brief exchange of gunfire. The assailant was subsequently neutralized by retaliatory gunfire. It is worth mentioning that the targeted convoy was comprised of two vehicles. One vehicle had a foreign national, who is being reported as the managing director of a company, while the other van was carrying four other foreign nationals. The authorities are currently investigating the incident to determine the motives behind the attack and identify any potential accomplices. As a result, security measures in the area have been heightened, and law enforcement agencies are on high alert to prevent any further threats to public safety.
The DIG East Zone talked to the media and gave an update on the recent suicide attack. He mentioned that the attacker’s neck was found intact and that investigations were ongoing. The police had received intelligence reports beforehand and had taken necessary precautions such as deploying guards and positioning themselves at different locations. The police mobiles were also prepared to prevent any such situation.
It is important to note that this is the second terrorist attack against foreign nationals. Earlier a gruesome incident took place at Bisham in which five engineers of China and a Pakistani driver lost their lives.
