South Africa not only booked their spot in the major event’s semi-finals for the first time since 2014, but they also surpassed the tournament record for most victories with a vital victory against co-hosts West Indies in the current T20 World Cup 2024.
The Proteas secured a three-wicket victory to extend their winning streak to seven games in the present tournament, the longest by any side in a single T20 World Cup. With six victories in the 2009 T20 World Cup, Sri Lanka is placed second.
The Islanders and Australia, which also won six games in the 2010 and 2021 tournaments, are tied.
In a dramatic match earlier in the day at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, North Sound, Antigua, South Africa defeated West Indies by three wickets (DLS method) to become the second team, after England, to advance from Group 2 of the Super 8 to the semi-final.
After winning the toss and electing to bowl first, the Proteas held the co-hosts to 135-8 in 20 overs.
Rain delayed the play, so the Proteas had to chase a rescheduled target of 123 runs in 17 overs. With seven wickets lost, they finished in 16.1 overs.
To get his team beyond the finish line, Marco Jansen produced an important undefeated cameo of 21 runs in 14 balls. When his team needed five runs to win, he hit a six off the first ball of the last over.
