Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif showed JUI chief Maulana Fazal-u-Rehman’s office support for legislation on madrasa registration and promised to contact the provincial chief minister to facilitate the process.
Recently, President Asif Ali Zardari signed the Societies Registration Amendment Act 2024 after which the National Assembly secretary issued the visit notification.
The act mandates that all madrassas, regardless of their names, must register, those established before the law must register within six months, while new ones must do so within a year.
Madrasas are required to submit annual reports of their education activities, undergo financial audits, and gradually improve contemporary subjects in their curriculum.
The law prohibits madrasas from publishing or teaching material promoting militancy, sectarianism, or hatred, while permitting comparative studies of different religions, the Quran and Sunnah, and Islamic jurisprudence.
The legislation aims to regulate and modernize religious education in the country.
