Sarim Burney, who faces charges related to forgery and human trafficking, has filed a plea in the Sindh High Court (SHC) seeking an accelerated trial in his ongoing case.
Burney, an entrepreneur and head of the Sarim Burney Welfare Trust, expressed frustration over the slow pace of proceedings.
His lawyer stated that Burney has been in custody since June 5, with a preliminary charge sheet submitted on June 24, yet the trial has yet to begin.
It was also noted that the women allegedly trafficked abroad remain in Pakistan.
The legal team has called on the court to hasten the trial and set a timetable for hearings.
After the initial proceedings, the SHC has directed the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and the prosecution to provide their replies within three weeks.
Sarim Burney was apprehended on June 6 at Karachi Airport following a request from the US Consulate.
According to the first FIR, the activist is accused of trafficking a newborn, Haya, to the US. The FIA claims the child, reportedly the most recent victim, was purchased from her parents for Rs1 million.
