Indian captain Rohit Sharma has publicly denounced Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 broadcasters Star Sports for taping and televising player-to-player private chats, deeming it a grave violation of privacy.
Rohit Sharma voiced his worries about the intrusive way that cricket players are covered by the media. He brought attention to the growing intrusiveness of cameras in cricket players’ life in a post on his X account.
The 37-year-old also stressed that his privacy was violated since Star Sports recorded and publicized his private talks even after he asked them not to.
My chat was recorded by Star Sports even though I asked them not to, and it was later shown on television, violating my right to private. The trust that exists between cricketers, fans, and the game will eventually be destroyed by the need for exclusive material and a singular concentration on views and engagement” he continued.
It is noteworthy that Sharma’s remark was a reaction to a previous event in which his interaction with Abhishek Nayar, the assistant coach of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), went viral on social media. He urged for greater discretion in media operations, cautioning that the unrelenting pursuit of exclusive news might destroy the faith that cricket fans have in players and the sport itself.
In the past, Rohit Sharma has asked Star Sports to turn off the audio recorders while he was speaking casually with colleagues and cameras were pointed on him. He was heard begging, “Brother, please close the audio, one audio has already made things difficult for me,” in a Star Sports video.
