Indian iconic singer Sonu Nigam paid paid tribute to the late playback legend Mohammed Rafi, praising his versatility in music.
Muhammad Rafi earned immense admiration for his ability to sing a wide variety of songs during his illustrious career. While today’s singers often acknowledge his immense contribution to music, the affection Sonu Nigam has for Rafi is truly unique and special.
Sonu often calls Rafi his ideal and is particularly struck by his ability to perform bhajans with such sincerity.
Recently, Nigam appeared at the 55th International Film Festival of India in Goa, where he shared his thoughts on legendary singers. The event featured a special session titled “Asmaan Se Aaya Farishta – A Tribute to Mohd Rafi – The King of Melody,” where Sonu Nigam paid tribute to Rafi.
Reflecting on Mohammed Rafi’s impact, Sonu said that Rafi was such a rare talent in the music industry who appeared only once in several decades.
“When he sings bhajans, it feels like a true Hindu is singing. Despite being a devout Muslim, how did he manage to transform his identity through his music?” Nigam expressed.
He said that he greatly admires the Rafi’s ability to transcend religious boundaries through his singing.
Nigam added, “I know many talented singers who excel in Sufi music but struggle with bhajans. Rafi sang for all occasions, from Ramzan to Raksha Bandhan”,
While taking about Rafi’s versatility Nigam said that Rafi was such an artist who could easily adjust in every genre of music. ” He could perform everything from joyful tracks to emotional ballads—even the famous ‘Happy Birthday.’ There was no genre he couldn’t conquer. Who was this man? He was like a volcano, only erupting when he picked up the microphone” Nigam acknowledged.
