Punjab’s Senior Minister, Marriyum Aurangzeb on Saturday introduced a comprehensive plan to tackle smog, urging stakeholders to reduce construction activities over the next three months.
The announcement was made during a press conference held at 90 Shara, Lahore.
The Minister emphasized that the Punjab government has suspended all construction projects undertaken by the Communication and Works (C&W) Department, with fines being imposed for non-compliance. These measures aim to reduce dust and particulate emissions from construction sites.
In a bid to prevent stubble burning, a major cause of air pollution, the government has distributed 1,000 super seeders to farmers, enabling them to manage crop residue without burning. For the first time, a provincial-level solid waste management strategy has also been introduced, aiming to enhance waste disposal methods and mitigate environmental pollution.
Aurangzeb further revealed that, over the past three months, 45,000 inspections have been conducted, leading to the sealing of 1,500 industrial plants and the registration of 1,500 FIRs. Additionally, 230 brick kilns were demolished, while remaining kilns in Lahore, Kasur, and Sheikhupura are being upgraded to eco-friendly zigzag technology.
The Minister noted that fines totaling Rs. 25 million have been imposed, and 250 individuals have been arrested for violating environmental regulations. She stressed the need for a collective effort to control smog, warning that failure to take responsibility by both the public and political sectors will hinder progress.
Aurangzeb reiterated the government’s commitment to banning the use of plastic and implementing necessary reforms to address environmental challenges. She expressed hope that with the cooperation of all stakeholders, significant improvement in the smog situation could be seen within two years.
