Punjab schools set to introduce new subject groups for matriculation students starting from the upcoming academic year in the province.
According to the Punjab School Education Department (SED) announcement these groups will give students more options as compared to the the traditional science and arts streams.
As per notification, the SED will introduce four new groups, health sciences, agriculture, information technology (IT), and entrepreneurship.
Matriculation students will select from these groups at the beginning of ninth grade and can continue with their chosen fields throughout their secondary education.
These new groups aim to align the curriculum with international standards and provide students with more practical and career-oriented options, notification read.
Earlier, SED Secretary Khalid Naeem Wattoo told a private TV channel about this new curricula strategy of introducing more groups for Matric students.
In response to a question about hiring teachers for these new groups, he mentioned that additional recruitment won’t be necessary, as current teachers will be trained to deliver the new curriculum.
He stated that the total marks for the matriculation examinations will remain 1,100, with the new subjects integrated into the existing framework.
Educationist Rana Liaqat stated that the introduction of these new subject groups will bring diversity, which is beneficial for students.
“Government should also provide facilities for upgrading science and IT laboratories in schools to better serve the students”, he stressed.
