Punjab government has extended this program by increasing the number of bikes for female students from 20,000 to 27,200.
The Transport Department has also announced that all female applicants who have applied will now equally eligible to receive an electric bike.
Punjab government approved Electric bike program in March 2024 with 20,000 bikes allocated. However, noting a high number of applications, the government extended this program up to 27,200 bikes. Now, under this program both electric and petrol bikes will be provided to female students.
Earlier Transport Department spokesperson stated that orphaned applicants would receive bikes free of charge. While the Bank of Punjab has announced that it will provide loans of 20,000 to male and female students to purchase bikes.
It is worth noting that under this program 2,000 electric bikes have been distributed among the female students. However, 6,500 electric bikes will be distributed among students in the coming months.
Currently, more than 15,000 students fall in the waiting list and will receive bikes in the next distribution phase.
Additional to this, to ease the financial burden on students, CM Maryam has announced a reduction in the bikes’ down payment to Rs. 25,000, with monthly installments set at under Rs. 5,000.
