Starting this Independence Day, August 14, the Punjab government will begin distributing free solar panels. The initiative, announced by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz last week, aims to ease the financial strain of electricity bills for residents.
Households using up to 200 units of electricity per month will qualify for free solar panels under this scheme, primarily benefiting lower-income families by enabling them to utilize solar power and reduce their electricity expenses.
“My goal is to provide relief to the people,” said Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. “We are committed to supporting our citizens through these challenging times.”
For those consuming 201 and 500 units per month, solar panels will be offered at a significantly reduced cost, with residents paying only 10% of the price and the government covering the remaining 90%. The panels will be distributed through local banks.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz highlighted the program’s economic impact, noting, “This initiative will cut electricity bills by 40%.” She stressed the government’s dedication to providing innovative solutions to support the population during difficult periods.
On July 8, the Chief Minister introduced the ‘Roshan Gharana’ program, which focuses on providing solar panels to households consuming up to 500 units of electricity monthly. To further alleviate financial burdens, payments can be made in easy installments over five years, with reduced payments during winter months.
The ‘Roshan Gharana’ scheme guarantees that all solar panels will be supplied by the government, ensuring high quality and reliability. Consumers can choose between government-supplied electricity and solar power based on their needs.
This initiative addresses rising electricity costs and the ongoing energy crisis, with the first phase prioritizing the most impoverished families through a transparent allocation process.
