The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) of Punjab has sounded a high alert in the province, anticipating severe weather conditions during the upcoming Muharram period.
According to PDMA’s spokesperson, Punjab is set to witness heavy rains and strong winds across most districts, with south Punjab expected to be particularly affected by thunderstorms and downpours from July 17 to 19.
Irfan Ali Kathia, the director general of PDMA, has called on the administration to implement special safety measures on the 10th of Muharram, known as Ashura.
He advised the public to avoid congregating under unstable structures or in deteriorated buildings due to the heightened risk of collapses during severe weather.
Rescue organizations have been placed on high alert for Ashura to ensure swift response to any emergencies arising from the predicted heavy rains.
Kathia emphasized the critical need for preparedness, particularly in managing potential flooding in rivers and canals throughout Punjab.
With the looming threat of urban flooding, the provincial authorities have been instructed to complete all necessary preparations and maintain high vigilance.
An alert has been issued to the relevant bodies to closely monitor the situation and ensure that all precautionary measures are effectively implemented.
Addressing the impending weather challenges, the PDMA DG stated, “We are actively monitoring the weather conditions and have alerted all pertinent agencies to guarantee a prompt and effective response to any emergencies. Citizens are urged to exercise caution and cooperate with rescue teams during this period.”
The alert underscored the importance of public safety and readiness in the face of potential natural disasters, with the PDMA aiming to mitigate risks and manage emergencies efficiently.
As the region prepares for heavy rains, the focus remains on safeguarding lives and minimizing damage through coordinated efforts and timely interventions.
