The differences between the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf ‘s (PTI) leadership over the slot of Opposition Leader in the National Assembly (NA) of Pakistan has ended up finally with the nomination of Umar Ayub.
Speaker of the NA- Ayaz Sadiq – has issued notification of the newly nominated Leader of the Opposition.
It is important to note that earlier the appointment of the Opposition Leader and of the Parliamentary Leader in the NA was delayed for the reasons that there was disagreement within the PTI over this important slot.
Former Speaker of the NA Asad Qaiser himself was interested to hold the position of the Opposition Leader while PTI’s founding Chairman Imran Khan nominated Umar for the position.
Earlier Asad Qaiser had also been reported to meet with NA Speaker and demanded delay of the notification in this regard.
Today Umar Ayub visited the Speaker’s office in this regard and submitted an application requesting for to notify him as Leader of Position. Speaker of the NA has notified Umar who is to represent independent members of the NA. Umar Ayub was a PTI backed contestant for the election of Prime Minister and was defeated by Shehbaz Sharif with 201 votes. Umar could secure only 92 against his opponent. The new opposition leader has taken charge of his office today and was welcomed by opposition’s members. It is being said that Umar will prove to be hard for the ruling party on floor of the House.
Omar Ayub lastly was Federal Minister for Economic Affairs in PTI’s government from April 2021 until April 2022. He has also served as Federal Minister for Energy from 2018 to 2021. He also served as the Minister of State for Finance in the federal cabinet from 2004 to 2007. He is also secretary general of PTI since May 2023. He is son of former military rulers of Pakistan Ayub Khan.
