Clashes erupted in Lahore as supporters of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) clashed with police forces following the arrest of several party members ahead of a planned rally at Ring Road, Kahna.
The unrest resulted in road closures, tire burnings, and widespread disruptions in parts of the city, escalating tensions.
The incident occurred as law enforcement authorities intensified their crackdown on PTI activists amid heightened political tensions across the country.
Led by former Prime Minister Imran Khan, PTI has been openly challenging the PML-N-led coalition government, staging protests to voice concerns over what they claim is political oppression and the curtailment of democratic freedoms.
Local reports revealed that dozens of PTI workers were detained by the police and taken to an undisclosed location. In retaliation, PTI supporters gathered at Mini Market in Gulberg, blocking key roads and setting fire to tyres.
The situation quickly spiraled as protestors began pelting police vehicles with stones, damaging property and shattering windows.
A police spokesperson reported that the altercation began near the Origa Centre in Gulberg during a routine police operation.
“The agitators disrupted the police in the course of their duties and resisted arrest,” the spokesperson confirmed. Law enforcement also indicated that several individuals involved in the attack on police vehicles had been arrested and are now facing further investigation.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Model Town, Ahsanullah Tarar, emphasized that law and order must be upheld, stating, “No one will be permitted to break the law. We are dedicated to maintaining public safety and will take the necessary actions to stop further disturbances.”
