Social media app Bluesky has seemed banned in Pakistan as thousands of users in the country cannot access it.
Large number of Pakistanis have recently signed in to the app similar to X. It got fame in Pakistan after an international media outlet posted a story about its worldwide popularity.
Following nomination of Elon Musk, the owner of X, in cabinet of US President-elect Donald Trump, the number of users of Bluesky further increased.
Former CEO and co-founder of formerly Twitter (now X) created the Bluesky in 2021. And so far millions of people around the globe are using it.
“Bluesky suddenly goes off on Tuesday morning. It is unclear so far if the Pakistan Telecom Authority [PTA] banned it or the app is facing some technical issue,” a used told The Opinion.
Pakistan Telecom Authority has so far issued no statement in this regard. But considering the past steps of the Pakistani government, it seems quite possible that the PTA put ban on it.
The government has put frequent curbs on internet in past couple of years, denying access to millions of people to social media. The government has also put a ban on famous social media app X for over a year. People could access X through VPN but the officials say government that it is going to ban the unregistered VPN from November 30.
The PTA chairman told the Senate Panel on Monday that non-registered Virtual Private Network (VPN) will not work in Pakistan from next month.
The Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) in an unprecedented proclamation has also declared the use of VPN as haram (immoral and illegal in Islam). CII chairman Dr Raghib Naeemi is considered close to Sharif family, the current rulers of Pakistan.
