The Prime Minister (PM) of Pakistan Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif meet the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) today.
This meeting held at CJP’s office to discuss a latter which six judges of the IHC earlier wrote to the Supreme Judicial Council alleging interference of executive and spy agencies in matters of justice.
Federal Minister for Law Azam Nazeer Tarar along with Attorney General of Pakistan Mansoor Awan accompanied the PM.
It was learnt that another full court session of the SC is being expected today as well.
A day earlier, a full court meeting of the SC judges – 14 judges – was held in this regard in which constitutional and legal status of the said letter was discussed. The Supreme Court Bar Association in a statement issued today has reiterated its stand over the supremacy of law and justice. Showing serious concerns over the incidents highlighted in the letter, the BAR has demanded a probe into this matter and assure interference free life of judges.
Pakistan Bar Council has sought constitution of a committee comprising three senior judges of the SC to probe allegations stated in the letter. The Council has stated no compromise can be made over the independence of judiciary. It has also called the meeting of its executive committee on April 5, 2024 regarding the matter in question. Similarly bar councils from al, the four provinces of the country have demanded a judicial inquiry in this regard to end such practices in future. Lahore and Karachi bar associations have announced holding of convention of all Pakistan’s lawyers to support rule of law in Pakistan.
The IHC judges’ letter earlier on Wednesday has urged the Supreme Judicial Council to convene a judicial convention over the alleged interference of members of the executive, including operatives of intelligence agencies, in judicial affairs. Through the letter all the six judges have sought guidance from the council on interference of the spy agencies in courts’ affairs and with regard to the duty of a judge to report and respond to actions on part of members of the executive, including operatives of intelligence agencies.
