President Asif Zardari on Saturday signed a new bill into law concerning the regulation of rallies and processions in Islamabad.
The legislation, now formally enacted, will take effect immediately under the title “The Public Assembly and Public Order Act.”
The law stipulates that rallies and processions may only be conducted in the Sangjani area of Islamabad or any other location where the government grants permission. Unauthorized rallies or processions will be subject to severe penalties, including imprisonment for up to three years for those involved.
Under the new law, the District Magistrate is granted the authority to impose bans on public gatherings. Additionally, the Magistrate has the power to direct police officers to disperse demonstrators. Individuals participating in unlawful rallies may be arrested, detained, and face up to ten years in prison.
The legislation is intended to maintain public order and ensure that public assemblies are conducted in a regulated manner.
