President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif marked the 19th anniversary of the 2005 earthquake, on Tuesday.
2005 earthquake in northeast of Pakistan resulted in the death of thousands of people. This catastrophic disaster turned thousands of buildings into rubbles leaving non-vanished marks in the area.
The after effects of the disaster are still lingered on in the effected areas.
In Pakistan ‘National Resilience Day’ is commemorated annually on October 8 to pay tribute to the victims.
President Zardari expressed his determination for better climate-resilient infrastructure. He said that authorities should educate people about these disasters.
Zardari also thanked the international community, civil society, and welfare organizations for their support after the 2005 earthquake. “Their aid helped to rebuild infrastructure and gave support to the affected communities”, Zardari added.
President said that climate change is posing serious threats globally. “Provincial and national authorities should collaborate for disasters management. Authorities should adopt modern technology to improve early warning system”, president said.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that ‘National Resilience Day’ motivate the nation to adopt best practices and improve resilience.
Shehbaz also appreciated disaster management departments for better disaster preparedness.
Premier recalled the devastation of the 2005 earthquake and the 2022 floods. He praised the resilience of the people and institutions in facing these crises.
Shehbaz also commended the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) for its work. He praised its National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC) for managing national disasters.
The PM also thanked the international community and private philanthropists for their support during 2005 earthquake and the 2022 floods.
