A powerful explosion in an ordnance factory in the Indian state of Maharashtra has claimed 8 lives, with several others still trapped under the debris.
According to Indian media reports, rescue teams are making determined efforts to save workers trapped under the rubble, with 2 individuals rescued alive so far.
The explosion was reported at around 10:30 AM, but the exact cause has yet to be identified.
The incident occurred in the Bhandara district of Maharashtra, with preliminary reports indicating that the explosion took place in the factory’s LTP section.
Indian media further reported that the blast was so loud that it was heard up to 5 kilometers away.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated that 14 workers were present on the factory’s roof when the explosion occurred, causing the building’s ceiling to collapse.
Fortunately, rescue teams have managed to save at least two workers so far. India has a history of negligence in ensuring the safe handling of weapons and ammunition, as evident in several past incidents.
In October 2024, a similar claustrophobic explosion occurred in an ordnance factory in Madhya Pradesh, resulting in multiple deaths and injuries.
Frequent accidents at ammunition storage and weapon manufacturing sites underscore the Indian military’s failure to enforce proper safety protocols and professional handling of such sensitive materials.
The recent incident highlights the urgent need for stricter safety measures and accountability in India’s defense infrastructure.
While rescue efforts measures and tragedy serve as a grim reminder of the recurring lapses in safety standards within India’s military facilities.
