Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif likely to pay attention to Pakistan’s dismal showing in the current Champions Trophy 2025.
The matter will also be discussed in the cabinet and parliament, perhaps leading to heightened monitoring of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), according to Rana Sanaullah, the PM’s assistant on political and public affairs.
Following back-to-back losses against archrivals India and New Zealand, Pakistan’s campaign came to an early end and they were eliminated from the competition. The Green Shirts, under by Muhammad Rizwan, were defending their championship in Pakistan’s first hosting of an ICC event in almost three decades.
Pakistan and Bangladesh are scheduled to play one other in Rawalpindi today, but the game is meaningless because both teams have already been eliminated.
Sanaullah vehemently denounced the PCB, claiming that it has been functioning for years without supervision.
“The nomination of a single chairman is not the only issue here. You’ll notice a concerning trend if you look over the previous five to ten years,” he warned.
He also expressed worries about the PCB’s lack of accountability and financial mismanagement.
“Grassroots cricket, including at the college and district levels, is in poor shape, but mentors who publicly acknowledge on television that they don’t even know their responsibilities are getting paid Rs5 million,” he said.
Sanaullah went on to highlight the disproportionate perks that PCB officials receive, saying that “it makes you wonder whether they are working for Pakistan or a developed nation.”
