Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, calling for the enforcement of Security Council resolutions regarding the Jammu and Kashmir conflict.
During the meeting, Sharif voiced Pakistan’s serious concerns over India’s actions in the occupied Kashmir region and emphasized the necessity of resolving the dispute for peace and stability in South Asia. He urged the international community to address the situation urgently.
In addition to Kashmir, the Prime Minister condemned Israeli military operations against Palestinians, calling for an immediate ceasefire and stressing the need for international accountability for Israel’s actions. Sharif reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to the creation of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state.
Shehbaz Sharif also highlighted the growing issue of Islamophobia and discrimination against Muslims, calling for global efforts to combat these rising challenges. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s dedication to international peace, noting its candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for 2025-26.
The Prime Minister expressed support for the UN’s “Summit of the Future,” initiated by Guterres, hoping it would provide solutions for financing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and addressing climate change challenges faced by developing nations.
Antonio Guterres, in turn, acknowledged Pakistan’s active involvement at the United Nations and its contributions to global peace through UN peacekeeping missions.
On the sidelines of the General Assembly, PM Sharif also met with other leaders, including President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu of the Maldives, Kuwait’s Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Sabah, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
PM Shehbaz is scheduled to address the UN General Assembly, where he will present Pakistan’s stance on international issues, including the Jammu and Kashmir and Palestine conflicts, and reaffirm the country’s commitment to multilateralism and the role of the UN in promoting global peace and prosperity.
