Pakistan’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Munir Akram, called for a Security Council investigation on the theft and illegal sale of nuclear materials in India.
While addressing the Security Council, Munir Akram stated that Pakistan is concerned about these incidents. “The nuclear material is being stolen and sold from the neighboring country” he added.
A recent Indian media report revealed that police arrested three smugglers in Bihar’s Gopalganj district with a highly radioactive and valuable Californium stone.
“The Security Council must address the recurring theft and illicit sale of radioactive materials in our Eastern neighbor,” Pakistan’s UN Ambassador Munir Akram said.
He cited a recent August 2024 incident involving Californium worth $100 million and noted similar cases in India in 2021, suggesting a black market for such materials. Akram also emphasized safeguarding the peaceful use of dual-use technologies while preventing access to non-state actors.
