Pakistan Railways has decreased fares for passenger and express trains, following the reduction in diesel prices. The PR, through a notification, implement the reduction immediately.
The PR, particularly, rationalised fare for those passengers who travel for 200 kilometre. It announced reduction up to 50 per cent on the said distance. “The fare table is available at PR official website. All reservation and booking offices of the railways across Pakistan will make reservation according to fresh notification,” the PR spokesperson told The Opinion.
The PR new fare will be applicable for economy and AC classes. According to the notification, the fare from Lahore to Rawalpindi has been decreased from Rs250 to Rs100.
The PR has been facing significant losses and the government has also planned the privatisation of the public utility. The PR fleet was comprising of more than 550 locomotives but it reduced to less than 100 after seven decades of independence. The successive governments in Pakistan failed to put the PR on track. Massive corruption, mismanagement and ill-conceived policies are said to be the reasons behind the decline of colonial legacy.
