Pakistan on Friday observed its 59th Defence Day, commemorating the sacrifices of fallen warriors in the 1965 war against India.
A change of guard took place in major cities, including the Quaid’s tomb in Karachi and Allama Iqbal’s in Lahore.
According to Pakistan’s state-run Radio Pakistan, “It was on this day in 1965 the Indian forces breached international border in the darkness of night to target Pakistan but the nation foiled sinister designs of the enemy.”
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) issued a statement on behalf of the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, Services Chiefs, and Armed Forces, stating that they “proudly commemorate the triumphant legacy of the 1965 War” — which they described as “a paradigm of the nation’s indomitable will and unyielding spirit.”
“This day serves as a profound tribute to the valor, sacrifice, and heroism of our gallant soldiers who courageously defended the motherland against formidable odds,” according to an ISPR press release.
“Fifty-nine years ago, the Pakistan Armed Forces firmly defeated the enemy’s malevolent plans, winning a momentous victory that will go down in history forever. The 1965 War was a light of hope, demonstrating the country’s tenacity and perseverance in the face of hardship.”
“We pay sincere gratitude to Pakistan’s martyrs who have given their lives in defense of the country since 1947, particularly those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in struggles and wars against terrorism. Their sacrifices will not be forgotten.”
