Major Sania Safdar of the Pakistan Army has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first UN peacekeeper in Cyprus to be awarded the 2023 ‘Certificate of Recognition.’
She win this award for her contributions to advancing gender equality.
Major Safdar currently holds the position of force signal officer within the mission.
The honor was conferred by Colin Stewart, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy in Cyprus, and was issued by the UN Department for Peace Operations based in New York.

In her remarks, Major Safdar expressed her gratitude for the recognition, stating, “This award is not only meaningful to me personally but also significant for our mission in Cyprus. Being the first peacekeeper from UNFICYP to receive this certificate underscores our commitment to gender equality.”
The “UN Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award,” established in 2016, recognizes military peacekeepers who embody the values of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security (WPS).
As part of her duties in Cyprus, Major Safdar oversees communication systems and plays a key role in promoting gender equality within the military.
Since her deployment last year, she has spearheaded various initiatives to integrate the Women, Peace, and Security Agenda.
