Parliamentary Secretary for Information and Technology Sabreen Ghori on Wednesday disclosed that government plans to launch 5G services in Pakistan by June 2025.
While addressing the floor of National assembly today he pledged to enhance internet speed as well. He affirmed that Pakistan’s internet infrastructure is set for a major upgrade by the middle of this year.
During the session the lawmakers raised the concerns of slow internet speed and maintained the stance that at times it gets very slow.
“No videos can be downloaded, the internet does not work at all at times, said PPP’s Agha Rafiullah.
One of the members’ said Bilawal Bhutto was correct when he questioned “which are these that only chew Pakistan’s internet cables?”
The IT secretary in response said that “there are several reasons for internet slowdowns ” within the country, shedding light on the connectivity and speed concerns of the general population.
Despite the promise, however, The PTA’s report for 2024, released in December, warned that transition to 5G would be difficult. The report highlighted that broadband penetration would make it more difficult.
There are also financial challenges related to this transition to 5G wireless technology. There are worries on the cost of this upgradation.
Pakistan in recent years has experienced repeated internet disruptions, slow speeds and limited access to the website.
Online censorship became the regular government tactic to control masses. These issues have been attributed to political events and security concerns mostly.
Pakistan’s Economy suffered highest losses in 2024 from internet outages in world. These disruptions affected 82.9 million people.
