Senior Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader and Senator Irfan Siddiqui has said that the government’s attempt to table the constitutional package has been “postponed indefinitely” while the ruling alliance is still working hard to reach an agreement on the highly contentious constitutional amendments.
The PML-N lawmaker said in an interview with local media on Monday that he did not disagree with the revisions on the grounds of principle and that Maulana Fazlur Rehman, the leader of the JUI-F, had “well-justified” reasons.
Siddiqui countered that Fazl need more time to examine the draft amendment.
Fazl concurs with some of the changes, but he needs more time to review the specifics of several clauses,” he continued.
This development follows many talks between the government and the JUI-F head, during which the latter was unsuccessful in persuading him to endorse the proposed constitutional changes.
Maulana Fazl met on Sunday with a number of political figures, including federal ministers, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) delegation, and Chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari.
Late at night, the political drama unfolded when Miftah Ismail, the party secretary, and former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, who was also the convener of the freshly formed Awaam Pakistan party, paid Fazl a visit.
In addition, the lawmaker received calls from Senator Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar and Balochistan’s Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti.
