The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has declared Israel fully accountable for the assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh, which occurred last week in Iran.
This statement was released following an urgent meeting of the 57-member organization in Saudi Arabia.
The OIC described the attack as a grave breach of Iranian sovereignty and condemned it as a serious act of aggression.
Mamadou Tangara, the Gambia’s Foreign Minister and OIC chair, emphasized that Haniyeh’s assassination and the ongoing conflict in Gaza might spark a wider regional confrontation.
Both Iran and Palestine had requested this meeting in Jeddah, with Iran promising retaliation against Israel, which it blames for the killing.
The U.S. and other Western nations have called for de-escalation, urging both Iran and Israel to avoid further conflict.
The U.S. State Department echoed this sentiment, hoping the OIC would advocate for restraint, stressing that regional escalation could endanger ceasefire negotiations in Gaza.
The OIC meeting highlighted the necessity for humanitarian aid and a sustainable political solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
