Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated that the victim, whose identity remains unknown, was sitting still on a stationary F train at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue station in Brooklyn, when a man ignite her clothing using a lighter.
The suspect left the train as officers on patrol rushed to the scene. “Patrol police noticed a person inside the train car completely engulfed in flames,” Jessica Tisch stated during a press briefing.
“Officers extinguished the fire, but the woman was declared dead at the scene”, Police Commissioner said
As per police early investigation, the attacker and the victim did not know each other, and there was no prior interaction between them.
The Footage of this tragic incident shared on social media showed a man in a gray hoodie, similar to the suspect’s attire, sitting on a bench nearby as the fire burned.
Later on Sunday, police arrested a man believed to be responsible while he was riding another subway train. The suspect’s identity has not yet been released. Authorities continue to investigate both the victim’s identity and the motive for the attack.
