Dunedin: Dunedin Airport in New Zealand has introduced a three-minute time limit for goodbye hugs. Aiming to reduce overcrowding in the airport’s drop-off area.
This new rule began in September, airport signs stated, “Max hug time three minutes”. Dan De Bono, CEO of Dunedin Airport, stated, “This decision was really important for streamlining the drop-off area and reducing delays from lengthy farewells.”
De Bono noted it as a reminder that the area is for quick farewells. This decision sparked different reactions on social media. Some users view it as a violation of personal freedoms, while others commend the airport’s effort to ensure smooth traffic.
Unlike other airports with stricter measures like fines or wheel clamping, New Zealand Dunedin’s airport approach is considered “quirky.”
De Bono reassured travelers that the time limit wouldn’t be strictly enforced. “We do not have huge police,” he joked, noting that those wanting longer farewells can head to the parking lot, where hugs can last up to 15 minutes for free.
While some may find the new rule limiting, De Bono highlighted that a 20-second hug is enough to release feel-good hormones like oxytocin and serotonin. He also mentioned that longer hugs can become “really awkward.”
