Netflix has released the trailer for its upcoming music biopic, ‘Amar Singh Chamkila,’ featuring popular star Diljit Dosanjh in the lead role as the renowned Indian folk singer.
Directed by acclaimed Bollywood filmmaker Imtiaz Ali, the film portrays Chamkila’s journey from poverty to becoming a cultural icon of the 80s.
Chamkila, known by his stage name which translates to “shiny (like a star)” in various Indian languages, held the title of Punjab’s top-selling music artist until his tragic assassination in 1988.
The trailer provides a glimpse into Chamkila’s life, showcasing his meteoric rise to fame and earning him comparisons to the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Kurt Cobain, and Amy Winehouse, all of whom passed away at the same age of 27.
Portrayed as the “Elvis of Punjab,” Chamkila’s journey unfolds against a backdrop of escalating fame and controversy stemming from the provocative lyrics of his songs. Despite facing backlash from conservative sectors of society, Chamkila remains resolute in his dedication to his craft.
Set against the backdrop of Punjab’s separatist movement and socio-political unrest, the trailer hints at the challenges Chamkila faced, including surveillance and threats.
However, the film also delves into the personal aspects of his life, including his romance with his wife, portrayed by Parineeti Chopra. Notably, the film promises an immersive musical experience, featuring Chamkila’s original songs alongside a new soundtrack composed by A.R. Rahman, a two-time Oscar winner.
Diljit Dosanjh celebrated as one of India’s most beloved pop stars, leads the cast, bringing his multifaceted talent to the screen. With previous acclaimed performances in films like ‘Udta Punjab,’ ‘Punjab 1984,’ and Netflix’s ‘Jogi,’ Dosanjh adds further anticipation to the biopic.
