National Accountability Bureau (NAB) arrested Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founder Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi in the Toshakhana case inquiry, on Saturday.
The step came after Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi were acquitted in the Iddat case verdict as the court accepted their appeals.
Following their acquittal in the iddat case, it was being speculated that Imran Khan and his wife may soon face arrests in connection with the May 9 riots and a new inquiry regarding Toshakhana gifts.
Additional district and sessions judge Afzal Majoka announced the judgment after reserving the much-awaited verdict earlier in the day.
“If they are not wanted in any other case, then PTI founder Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi must be released [from jail] immediately,” the judge declared after approving their appeals.
PTI welcomes the decision by the Islamabad court, and called it victory for democracy. PTI lawyer and leader Barrister Ali Zafar said that there is no hurdle in release of PTI founder Imran Khan.
In February of this year, a trial court declared the PTI founder and Bushra’s nikah to be fraudulent after Bushra’s ex-husband, Khawar Maneka, petitioned the court to dissolve the pair’s marriage. As a result, the couple received seven years in prison and a fine of Rs 500,000 each.
Following that, the couple contested their conviction and even filed a motion with the IHC asking the court for various forms of relief.
