After President Asif Ali Zardari approved the 26th constitutional amendment, an official notification has been released to bring the new law into effect.
This amendment outlines the procedure for selecting Pakistan’s next Chief Justice, with the formation of a parliamentary committee already underway.
Reports indicates that the Speaker of the National Assembly has requested parliamentary leaders to provide nominations for a 12-member committee, which will include 8 representatives from the National Assembly and 4 from the Senate.
Once this committee is established, the Ministry of Law will present a list of three senior judges for review.
The committee will then choose the next Chief Justice from this shortlist.
The amendment was officially passed earlier today in Parliament shortly after the Fajr prayer, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif quickly forwarding the summary to the President, leading to the prompt approval of the new law.
