Journalist Bachal Ghanio was fatally shot by unknown attackers in District Gothki on Tuesday while he was at his fields.
The police reported that Ghanio’s body has been transported to Obaro Hospital for an autopsy, and an investigation is currently underway.
Local witnesses and residents suggest that bandits might be behind the attack. Ghanio’s family has staged a protest outside the office of the Senior Superintendent of Police in Mirpur Mathelo, demanding the immediate arrest of the perpetrators.
According to Ghanio’s son, the journalist had been involved in a previous dispute with certain community members, though this conflict had been resolved. Ghanio had been targeted before by the same individuals.
In reaction to the murder, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has called for urgent action to apprehend those responsible and has urged a stronger crackdown on criminal activities in the area.
Senior Minister Sharjeel Memon has denounced the attack and pledged that justice will be pursued.
This incident adds to a troubling trend of violence against journalists in Pakistan. Last month, reporter Malik Hassan Zaib was killed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Nowshera district.
In May, Muhammad Siddique Mengal of Balochistan was killed in a bomb blast, and Ashfaq Ahmed Sial was shot in Muzaffargarh. Kamran Dawar from North Waziristan and Nasrullah Gadani were also murdered in May, while Khalil Jibran was killed in June in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
