A bus driver ran over pedestrians and vehicles in Kurla, the Indian city of Mumbai on Monday night. The incident claimed the lives of six people and injured 49 others.
The Indian police have detained the bus driver. The incident occurred at around 9:45 pm when the driver of the Burhan Mumbai Electricity Supply and Transport Undertaking (BEST) bus (route number 332) lost control and ran over several vehicles and pedestrians, after which the bus crashed into the wall of a housing society and came to a halt.
The deceased have been identified as Kaniz Fatima Ansari, Shivam Kashyap, Afreen Abdul Salam Shah, and Anam Sheikh.
After the accident, locals rushed the injured to the nearby Bhabha Hospital. Emergency services, including police and fire brigade teams, arrived shortly after.
More than 45 people were injured in the accident, some of whom are still undergoing treatment at hospitals and other medical facilities.
CCTV footage from the scene shows the bus speeding and people running to escape the danger.
The bus driver, Sanjay More, has been arrested by the police and is facing charges of culpable homicide under various sections of the Indian law at the Kurla police station.
The driver has been subjected to a medical examination to determine whether he has alcohol in his blood.
In addition, the bus company’s technical team will inspect the bus for any mechanical defects.
