Moosa Harraj is now the Oxford Union president for Michaelmas 2025 by securing 833 highest number of votes.
Runnerup Chris Collins, who earned 663 votes, was bested by him.
Presently the Union’s Librarian, Harraj is working on an MPhil in Economics at Balliol College.
Running below the Bridge slate, he easily won all four officer positions and so dominated the vote.
Katherine Yang won the full officer election with 826 votes at Librarian, besting Nathanael KennedyLeroi, who got 572 votes.
With 878 votes, Raza Nazar was chosen Treasurer against Oliver “JL” JonesLyons’ 533 votes.
Jennifer Yang beat out Prajwal Pandey, who garnered 548 votes, to win the Secretary post with 855 votes.
Furthermore elected to the Standing Committee are Matthew Chiu, Brayden Lee, Chloe Pomfret, Victor MarroquínMerino, Samy Medjoub, Akshay Pendyala.
On March 9, the findings of the Secretary’s Committee will be made public.
Harraj’s bid emphasized his knowledge of the financial, organizational, and reputational issues of the Union as well as his service as an elected official.
By contrast, Collins—a finalist in Classics at Corpus Christi College—denounced what he called “petty student politics” and stressed a vision focused on organizing important events and important debates.
Held on 7 March, the election had a record turnout of 1,730 votes, which made for a big rise over previous elections—1,187 votes in Trinity 2024 and 1,268 in Michaelmas 2024.
Members of the Oxford Union may rank candidates for each office using a single transferable voting (STV) technique.
42 candidates were linked with Bridge in this election, while 33 were affiliated with the Rebuild roster.
Collins thanked his followers and urged Union cohesion following the election results. Addressing The Oxford Student, he remarked:
“The most recent election has been the most massive ever, and I am very thankful to all those who gave us their support.”
The Union is fantastic, and I pray we can rise above the difficulties of the last several years. For the future, I want Moosa Harraj every best wish.
Given the Bridge slate’s total control of the Union, focus now shifts to Harraj’s leadership as he gets ready to head one of Oxford’s most esteemed organizations.
