The humid and hot weather of Lahore and other cities of Punjab turned pleasant. This change occurred after heavy monsoon rain and gusty winds. These conditions continued with occasional gaps Friday midnight and on Saturday afternoon.
Lahore received its first spell of rain late night on Friday which continued with occasional gaps till morning. The city also received showers on Saturday afternoon.
Muslim Town, Model Town, Lakshmi Chowk, Iqbal Town and many other areas received the rain.
Maximum rain was recorded at 60mm at the Iqbal Town SDO office, followed by 54mm at Pani Wala Talab. Other measurements included 41mm at Lakshami, 49mm at Johar Town, and 33mm at Qurtaba Chowk.
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) predicted that the monsoon rains are expected to continue across the province until August 20.
However, WASA officials managed to clear the large part of the city.
Pakistan Meteorological Department, more rainfall is anticipated in the coming 24 hours across most districts of Punjab.
The PDMA specifically mentioned Lahore, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Multan, Bahawalpur, Sargodha, Gujrat, Dera Ghazi Khan, and Sahiwal as areas likely to experience heavy showers.
These monsoon rains have also raised concerns about possible flooding in the rivers and streams of Punjab. The spokesperson for the PDMA reported that while the Indus River is currently witnessing a low-level flood, there is a potential for a high-level flood in the Chenab River within the next 24 hours. Water levels in the Chenab are expected to surge to between 200,000 and 250,000 cusecs.
DG PDMA Irfan Khatia reassured the public that all necessary measures have been taken to address the potential flood risks. The water flow in the Ravi River, particularly at Jassar and Shahdara, remains within normal levels. Citizens are urged to exercise caution during the rainy season. They should particularly stay away from electric poles and hanging wires to avoid any accidents.
Punjab CM orders depts to stay alert amid Monsoon alert
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has directed departments concerned to remain alert in the wake of heavy monsoon rains.
Maryam Nawaz directed district management to timely shift people to safer places and set up relief camps in case of flood-like situation.
The Punjab CM directed all departments to ensure round the clock monitoring of rivers and nullahs in Narowal, Sialkot and other districts.
